Supporting People who Inject Drugs with Venous Leg Ulcers
Thu 10 Dec 2026 12:30-13:30
Webinar, 1 CPD hour

Improving care for people who inject drugs and develop venous leg ulcers

People who inject drugs can develop complex lower-limb wounds that are difficult to assess, treat and manage. Vascular complications, infection risks and difficulties engaging with healthcare services can all affect treatment and healing.

Led by Jess Dingley, Vascular Specialist Nurse at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, this free one-hour webinar will explore the particular challenges of supporting people who inject drugs and present with suspected venous leg ulcers.

Drawing on clinical experience, Jess will examine how to recognise complications, understand the person behind the wound and work collaboratively to improve engagement and care.

* Places are free, and you can attend live or access the recording on-demand after the webinar

Key learning outcomes

Recognising complications and overcoming barriers to effective care

Caring for people who inject drugs and develop lower-limb wounds requires an understanding of both the clinical complications and the circumstances that can make treatment difficult. This webinar will help you look beyond the wound itself and consider how to provide more effective, individualised care. Key learning points:

  • Understand why people who inject drugs may develop venous leg ulcers and other lower-limb complications
  • Recognise the importance of establishing whether a wound is venous in origin or has another underlying cause
  • Explore vascular complications and infection risks that can complicate assessment and treatment
  • Consider how a person's circumstances, experiences and priorities can influence engagement with care
  • Identify practical barriers to assessment, treatment and follow-up
  • Explore how collaboration and more flexible care can improve continuity and engagement
Practical clinical insights

Looking beyond the ulcer to understand and support the patient

Supporting people who inject drugs can present challenges that are not resolved through conventional wound-care advice alone. This webinar offers an opportunity to learn from Jess Dingley's clinical experience and consider how assessment, communication and joined-up care can make a difference. During this webinar, you will have the opportunity to:

•    Hear from an experienced Vascular Specialist Nurse
working with complex lower-limb presentations
•    Explore clinical and practical challenges
that may be familiar within your own service
•    Consider ways to improve engagement
when patients find it difficult to access or continue treatment
•    Ask questions
and take away ideas to discuss with colleagues
•    Access the recording on-demand
if you are unable to attend live
