Biography

Helen is a Consultant Neonatologist and Clinical Lead at the Kent & Medway Local Maternity and Neonatal System (K&M LMNS), as well as an Expert Reference Group member for the NHS England regional Maternity and Neonatal System. As a Principal Investigator, she leads neonatal research focused on improving outcomes and has been nominated for the Medway Hospital Research and Innovation Award (2024) and the Nigerian Healthcare Professional UK/NHS@70 Award (2019).

Helen chairs the K&M LMNS neonatal subgroup and leads initiatives to improve neonatal care, including “Tracking Trends in Neonatal Morbidity,” which uses regional data to identify trends and drive improvements. She also leads the LMNS Equity and Equalities Stakeholders Group, working to reduce health disparities and promote equitable care.

At Medway Hospital, Helen oversees quality improvement and audit, supports adherence to national standards and NICE guidance, and champions Family Integrated Care, including parent-led ward rounds at the Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit.

Passionate about reducing inequalities in neonatal care, Helen developed the “Jaundice in Darker Skin Tone Babies” education programme for healthcare professionals, following recognition of the increased risk of severe jaundice and brain injury in babies with darker skin tones. Her first staff webinar in 2024 attracted over 300 NHS professionals, while a parent-focused programme helps families recognise jaundice and seek timely care.

Helen has also been nominated twice for the KSS Best Educational Supervisor Award (2023 and 2024). Through research, education, quality improvement and social media, she is committed to making neonatal information more accessible, improving outcomes and reducing healthcare inequalities.
